The Uttar Pradesh government changed the name of Allahabad to Prayagaraj

When the name Prayagraj was approved?

The Government has approved the proposal to be Prayagraj by renaming Allahabad on 16th October 2018. The major city of Uttar Pradesh will now be known as the new name Prayagraj.

Belief on naming Allahabad

It is believed that the Mughal emperor had renamed Prayag to Allahabad (Allaha+ Aabad).

Why the name change to Pryagraj?

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said that the Saints were constantly seeking to Prayag the Allahabad's name. Allahabad also receives two holy rivers that derive from the Devbhumi, so it is called the Parayagaraj.

The background of the verdict

Given the mythological and religious significance, there was a demand for Allahabad's name Prayagraj for years.
But the final decision was never taken on this one.

In March 2017, when the Yogi government assumed power over Uttar Pradesh, he promised that he would renamed ALLAHABAD as PRAYAGRAJ. After this many saints raised the demand of Prayagraj to Allahabad. 

Prayagaraj's Historical Approach

• It is known through Akbarnama, Ain I Akbari and other Mugalakalin historical books that Akbar had settled the foundation of the fortress in Prayagaraj around 1574.
• It is believed that Akbar resettled the new city which he named Allahabad. Till then, it was known only by the name of Prayagaraj.
• In addition to this even in Ramacharit Manas,  the city was called as Prayagaraj.
• This is mentioned in the Valmiki Ramayana that the water of confluence was anointing kings in ancient times.
• From the 102 chapters to the 107th chapter of the most ancient and authentic Purana Matsya Purana, the significance of this shrine is described. It says that Prayag is the region of Prajapati where Ganga and Yamuna flows.

 How does the name of a place be changed?

First of all,  the local people or people's representative send a proposal to change the name of the city to the state government.

The state cabinet considers the proposal and approves the governor's consent after giving approval.

The governor delivers the Central Home Ministry for final approval with a recommendation on the proposal.

The state Government issued a name change notification after the green-flagged from the home ministry.
